2008 Songs of Life Festival

In 2008, Varna International produced the first Songs of Life International Choral-Orchestral Festival to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews. The concerts were held in Sofia, Plovdiv, Petah Tikva, and Jerusalem with spectacular performances of Ernest Bloch’s choral-orchestral masterpiece Sacred Service.

Thousands of individuals gathered in Bulgaria and Israel to attend the concerts and celebrate the event as 49,000 flowers descended upon four cities in Bulgaria – a single flower as tribute to each life that blossomed forth from one of the world’s darkest times.

As the granddaughter of two Bulgarian Jewish survivors, Sharon very aptly described the experience: “No words can express the tremendous sense of victory, freedom, and justification I felt during the Festival.”
